Factiva - A whole new way to look at search

www.factiva.com Factiva, a Dow Jones and Reuters Company, announced that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has issued United States Patent number 6,938,046. The patent, titled “Polyarchical Data Indexing and Automatically Generated Hierarchical Data Indexing Paths”, covers Factiva Intelligent Indexing - the Factiva Industry, Region and Subject Taxonomy and Factiva Company Taxonomy which is applied to all of the content, in all formats and languages, in Factiva’s business news information services.

“Factiva is committed to innovation and creating tools that help businesses organize information so employees can locate content quickly and easily,” said Clare Hart, president and CEO, Factiva. “Factiva Intelligent Indexing is such a tool and by implementing a comprehensive taxonomy, companies can connect employees to the organization’s information assets, ensuring they have easy access to the information they need to be productive and make better decisions, faster.”

Factiva Intelligent Indexing is a method of data categorization, using polyarchical indexing codes and automatically generated expansion paths, for future searching and information retrieval. It involves applying a code, which relates to a subject matter, to a particular document. The codes are then linked with the categories created to represent various subject matters. In order to search for those Factiva documents which contain content in a particular category, Factiva’s search applications can simply retrieve all documents containing the code linked for that category.

Factiva's comprehensive, award-winning taxonomy has been developed over the last 25 years, can be integrated into a portal or intranet, and is flexible, multilingual and easily extensible to satisfy the growing needs of an organization.

Hart continued, “Unstructured data is believed to account for 80 to 85 percent of a typical organization’s internal information. A high-quality, well-maintained taxonomy is crucial if users are to be able to find the right answers quickly and precisely in repositories of articles and documents that are expanding at phenomenal rates. Unless this data is categorized using standard vocabulary terms, it can be extremely difficult to find the precise information needed to make effective business decisions.”
